ENTRY AND RESIDENCE
The ways and conditions of entry into the Republic of Slovenia differ with regard to whether you are a citizen of a member state of the European Economic Area (EEA) (EEA member states are the European Union's member countries, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) or a third-country national (all other states).
If you are a third-country national and wish to enter the Republic of Slovenia or stay there for tourist, business, personal or other purposes, you are required to obtain a visa at a diplomatic mission or consulate of the Republic of Slovenia abroad prior to entering the Republic of Slovenia. For the same purposes you may enter the Republic of Slovenia and stay there for a certain period of time (no longer than three months in a six-month period, starting on the date of the first entry) only on the basis of your passport if you are a citizen of a country whose citizens are not required to obtain a visa to enter the Republic of Slovenia.
A visa or a residence permit must be obtained prior to entering the Republic of Slovenia. If you wish to enter the Republic of Slovenia and stay there for other purposes than those allowed on the basis of your visa, you are required to obtain a residence permit issued in the Republic of Slovenia, which must be obtained before entering the Republic of Slovenia, aside from the exceptions stipulated by law.
If after the expiry of your residence permit you wish to continue residing in the Republic of Slovenia for the same purpose, you can apply for an extension to your permit. If you wish to extend your permit for purposes other than those stated when your valid permit was issued, you can apply for the renewal of a temporary residence permit.
Depending on the type of permit obtained, you are obliged to register your temporary or permanent residence.
If you are a citizen of another EEA member state, you can enter the Republic of Slovenia with a valid identity card or a valid passport and no entry permit is required, i.e. a visa or a residence permit. This applies regardless of the purpose of your entry and stay in the Republic of Slovenia (also in cases where you wish to enter the Republic of Slovenia for employment, education, self-employment, settlement, etc.). You may stay in the Republic of Slovenia without residence registration for the first three months after entry, while for a longer stay you are required to register your stay, i.e. apply for the issue of a residence registration certificate at the administrative unit in the area of your residence prior to the expiry of your permitted three-month stay. You can of course apply for a residence registration certificate immediately upon entering the Republic of Slovenia.
Information on the entry and residence of nationals of the EU/EEA is available here.
You can obtain citizenship of the Republic of Slovenia in accordance with the Citizenship Act on various bases and provided that you fulfil all the prescribed conditions.
