SCHOOLING/EDUCATION

The school system of the Republic of Slovenia is divided into primary education, secondary education and tertiary education. It is laid down by law that public schools are secular and the school environment autonomous; political and denominational activities are forbidden in public schools.

Children can be enrolled for the international primary school programme under the system of the IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization) at the Danila Kumar primary school in Ljubljana.

In primary schools and secondary schools there are well-organised textbook funds from which pupils and students can borrow textbooks upon the payment of the borrowing fee and return the textbooks at the end of the school year. What is more, schools also offer meals, and parents who find themselves in a difficult socio-economic situation may ask for a subsidy for school meals for their children.

All information on the calendar of the school year, school regulations, teachers, schedules, meals and activities are to be found in school publications distributed by the schools to the pupils and students at the beginning of a school year.

Secondary school students and higher education students can also apply for a scholarship.

For a better integration into the new environment speaking the language of the country and knowing the country you live in is of vital importance. Therefore, you can participate in Slovenian language courses and courses for getting acquainted with Slovenian history, culture and constitutional system.  You can also sit a basic level Slovenian language exam.

If you or your family members wish to take part in education or pursue a profession for which you are qualified, you can submit your certificates or diplomas to the procedure for recognition and assessment of education.

There are plenty of adult education programmes, very popular is also the so-called Third Age University intended for older adults.
