Road safety

Road safety legislation is available at the Slovenian Traffic Agency's website and Ministry of Transport's website. Road traffic offences are punishable with a fine, prohibition of driving a motor vehicle and penalty points. The accumulation of 18 or more penalty points will automatically render your driving licence invalid. If this is your first revocation of licence, you may apply for a new one after six months.

To qualify for a new licence, you need to

-         attend an additional course in safe driving  or

-         attend a rehabilitation programme (for drink or drug driving offences etc.) and

-         take a driving test again.

If you are found to be driving a vehicle with foreign driving licence and have received 18 or more penalty points, you may be prohibited from driving a vehicle in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia for a period of one year.

The Traffic Information Centre for Public Roads

collects information on conditions on state roads and traffic and transfers it to the media and users of the national road network. You can get up-to-date information on road conditions, street camera footage, information on road closures and other events on their website. This kind of information is of particular value for longer trips. It will help you plan your trip and get to your destination safely. If you need traffic information, you can also call 1970.

Here are some Slovenian road rules:
